Ground work continues at former Shields Elementary

Heavy demolition set for early September to clear land for new middle school
August 23, 2022

With selective demolition underway, the razing of Shields Elementary is set to begin in early September to clear the land in preparation for construction of a new middle school.

The old school closed in April after 55 years of operation when the new Lewes Elementary School opened to students just across Sussex Drive.

The middle school was approved by referendum in March 2018 and is set to open in the 2024-25 school year. When complete, Lewes Elementary and the new middle school will share a campus that stretches from Savannah Road to DuPont Avenue.

Baseball and softball diamonds and a multipurpose field will be located behind Lewes Elementary, with a track and additional field set farther back.
