Habitat for Humanity's ReStore predemolition team receives award

November 9, 2015

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity announces that its ReStore predemolition team was honored by Gov. Jack Markell with the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Service Award Oct. 6 at Dover Downs.

The Governor’s Award recipients represent the efforts of thousands of Delawareans who make positive contributions to society and inspire others to do the same. Those awarded engaged in diverse activities: mentoring youth and adults, supporting individuals during difficult experiences, caring for vulnerable populations, educating others about Delaware’s environment, advocating for causes close to their hearts, and raising thousands of dollars for their communities. Markell lauded the individuals and organizations for the selfless hours they devote to volunteering.

"These volunteers recognize that it's not about them. It's about the people they serve," he said. "The people we honor not only illustrate the growing ethic of volunteerism in our state, but they contribute to a stronger and healthier Delaware."

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's ReStore predemo team volunteers remove cabinetry, appliances, doors, plumbing fixtures and more from houses that are scheduled for demolition. All that is harvested from theses houses is made available for purchase at the local ReStore. These pre-emolition projects reduce the cost of demolition for the property owner, keep reusable items from going into landfills and help the ReStore raise money. ReStore sells reusable and surplus building materials to the public. Most ReStores focus on home improvement goods like furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances. Sussex Habitat’s ReStore accepts donated goods which are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price. The proceeds help fund the construction of homes for deserving families in Sussex County. Last year alone, SCHFH’s ReStore kept 132 tons of materials from being deposited into local landfills. Habitat for Humanity's ReStores are treasure troves where good finds fund good works.
