Harrington Raceway hosts fundraiser for FSAC-SPCA
Harrington Raceway and Casino hosted a successful pet food and supply donation drive to benefit the First State Animal Center and Kent County SPCA Nov. 22. With the support of more than 2,000 customers, the response was overwhelming. The net result was approximately 11 bulk or Gaylord boxes (each with an estimated 1,000-pound capacity) filled with pet items such as food, leashes, collars, toys, blankets, beds and more that were featured on a wish list from the FSAC-SPCA. The items were sorted and transported to their beneficiary with the help of the Food Bank of Delaware Dec. 11.
“The homeless animals are most appreciative of the drive sponsored by Harrington Casino,” said First State Animal Center and SPCA Executive Director Kevin Usilton. “Words cannot express how touched everyone was by the overwhelming outpouring of care by our humans. The animals will benefit from these gifts for months to come. “
Harrington Raceway and Casino’s donation drive was similar to the wildly successful food drive that started last year after Christmas to benefit the Food Bank of Delaware, and this year will take place Sunday, Dec. 27. Customers wanting to participate are asked to donate unexpired items that are in high demand from the Food Bank, such as peanut butter, tuna fish, canned meats, hot and cold cereals, pasta, shelf-stable milk and canned fruits and vegetables. Last year’s food drive netted more than 12,000 cans.
First State Animal Center and SPCA’s mission is to protect animals from people through prevention of cruelty and suffering, rescue of the trapped or injured, emergency medical treatment, temporary housing for homeless animals and reducing homeless pet overpopulation. They also strive to place only stable, safe and well-adjusted animals into homes where they will thrive, while simultaneously educating the public about responsible pet guardianship.
