Healing Arts welcomes osteopathic craniosacral physician

June 12, 2023

Doug Leonard, DO, of Find Your Health LLC has joined Healing Arts on Savannah, 1500 Savannah Road, Lewes. Leonard brings extensive training in osteopathic craniosacral treatment to the Cape Region. He is now accepting new patients.

Kathy Madden, LCSW, Healing Arts on Savannah owner/director, said, “We are so fortunate to welcome Doug with his extensive clinical background and this proven gentle healing modality to our practice and this community.”

The Healing Arts on Savannah team includes behavioral health services provided by Cathy Rose, LPCMH, and Kathy Madden, LCSW, with massage therapy services provided by Cindi Spencer, LMT, and newcomer Brooke Havrilla, LMT.

Osteopathic craniosacral treatment is a gentle, hands-on treatment that is extremely relaxing, and physician intervention is kept at a minimum. Craniosacral therapy is nearly 100 years old and has evolved significantly. Treatment involves coming into contact with the subtle rhythms of the cranial and sacral bones as well as the cerebrospinal fluid movement. Restrictions in healthy movement are addressed, and there is restoration of normal rhythm and flow of the bones and fluids. The power of the treatment has increasingly focused on the bioenergetics of healing, which Leonard notes is the primary mode of treatment he uses.

The wide variety of problems that can be addressed by osteopathic craniosacral therapy include acute and chronic pain from the top of the head to the feet, physical and emotional trauma, and physical effects of stress such as headache and backache.

Leonard said, “There is a real need for osteopathic manipulative treatment and especially for craniosacral treatment in Kent and Sussex counties. Patients have been seeking this service following the closure of an osteopathic craniosacral practice in Lewes nearly 10 years ago. Many doctors of osteopathy will do some manipulative treatment generally as part of their family medicine practice, but my primary focus is a hands-on, no-medication philosophy dedicated to osteopathic manipulation.”

Leonard has retired from psychiatric practice and no longer prescribes medications, but he brings an extensive knowledge of traditional medical and surgical interventions as well as excellence in teaching medical students and psychiatric residents.

”I have a deep understanding of medication use and actions, including the many side effects,” he said.

Throughout his career, he has worked as a team player and is comfortable communicating about his treatment with other members of the patient’s healthcare team.

Find Your Health LLC is designed to help people regain their function, natural vitality and health. It refers to a fundamental teaching of the founder of osteopathy, A.T. Still, who would tell his young doctors and students, “The first object of the physician is to find the health in the individual; anyone can find disease.”

Another fundamental osteopathic principle is that the body has an inherent ability to heal itself.

Leonard’s efforts are to engage and foster the body’s healing forces. Holistic thinking is a founding principle of osteopathy, and Leonard supports all realms of healthful living including, sleep, nutrition, exercise, breath, mind and spiritual health.

There is a limited Introductory offer of a free phone consultation with Leonard to begin the journey to find one’s health.
