Hip Hop Fundamentals arts outreach visits local schools

November 2, 2025

Students at four schools in the Cape Henlopen district were recently treated to high-energy performances by Hip Hop Fundamentals, an award-winning team of professional breakdancers who teach the art and culture of hip hop through interactive music, movement and storytelling assemblies. The talented group of Philadelphia artists was brought to schools through the Freeman Arts Education program.

Hip Hop Fundamentals visited Milton, Rehoboth and Lewes elementary schools, and the Little Vikings preschool. The programs blend breakdancing, storytelling and audience participation into a dynamic lesson on resilience, creativity and teamwork. Each performance connected the art of hip hop to core educational themes ranging from self-expression and problem-solving to the power of community. Students not only watched the professional dancers perform but also joined in on rhythm, movement and reflection activities that emphasized inclusion and positive energy.

“Hip Hop Fundamentals had our students completely engaged from start to finish,” said Dr. Clara Conn, Milton Elementary School principal. “They combined fun and movement with meaningful messages about respect, perseverance and believing in yourself, things that are very important for our students to hear.”

“The energy in the room was exciting,” said Dr. Kimberly Corbidge, Lewes Elementary principal. “Our students saw that learning can happen in many forms, through music, art and movement, and that everyone has a story worth telling.”

The assemblies were part of the district’s ongoing commitment to providing students with culturally responsive, engaging experiences that foster connection, creativity and confidence.
