Historic Lewes Farmers Market to open for season May 7

Opening day set at Lewes Elementary School parking lot
May 5, 2022

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will celebrate the opening of its 17th season from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, May 7, at the Lewes Elementary School parking lot at 820 Savannah Road, Lewes, its designated location when inclement weather is in the forecast.

Vendors include 31 local farmers/producers bringing the best local fresh veggies, fruit, eggs, milk, yogurt, beef, pork, chicken, lamb, seafood, mushrooms, cut flowers, plants, coffee, fresh breads and pastries, jams and much more.

Because of expected weather conditions, a planned demo by Heirloom Restaurant will be rescheduled.

There are a number of new vendors at the market this year, including Nash Veggies, a small-acreage farm using no-spray regenerative growing techniques incorporating elements of permaculture to the field layout in an effort to work with nature by producing food as well as habitat for native species.

Looking for a beautiful bouquet for Mother’s Day? Winters Farm Florals uses regenerative no-till practices to grow beautiful cut flowers. It focuses on growing high-quality flowers in hoop houses and in the field, with more than 50 carefully selected varieties and cultivars that have been bred for cut-flower production and select florist-quality blooms to bring to market.

In addition to the freshest blue crabs in the Delmarva, Jackie Blues now offers fresh hand-picked lump and claw crabmeat with no preservatives.

Hattie’s Garden returns to the Saturday market after a two-year hiatus. It’s time to plant the garden, and this week Hattie will have all types of plants including heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, Swiss chard, lettuce, dill, cilantro, parsley, various basils and other herbs. She’ll also have flower plants including zinnias, marigolds and cosmos.

A number of the market vendors take preorders. The market website historiclewesfarmersmarket.org lists all vendors, their contact information, and whether or not they take preorders. Customers who preorder may pick up their items at the vendor tent in the market.

The market’s weekly newsletter lists demos and more. Email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org with a request to be added to the list.

The market processes SNAP, WIC and SFMNP, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Customers may go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.

The HLFM continues its food pantry purchase program. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk and other food from growers at the market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to various food pantries including Epworth church and Casa San Francisco. The market team thanks customers for their generosity.

The market team thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2022 HLFM Market Champion, for its continued support.
