History chat to spotlight WWII propaganda posters Sept. 21
Historian Paul Sparrow will be joined by artist Fred Dylla for a Fireside Chat reflecting on the use of visual art in war propaganda, at 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21, in the fireplace area at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. The event will also stream live via Zoom.
During WWII, the U.S. home front was as important as the battlefield, and President Roosevelt needed to raise billions of dollars to pay for the war. One of his tactics was posting millions of colorful posters designed by some of the United States’ finest artists promoting the sale of war bonds, warning "loose lips sink ships," and encouraging every citizen to recycle used materials and obey the strict rationing rules. Sparrow and Dylla will present a wide range of these posters, explain their meaning and impact, and explore how this effort shaped the post-war future of graphic design and advertising.
Sparrow is former director of the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. Dylla is founder of the Delaware White-line Woodcut Guild and teaches introductory and advanced art workshops.
