HOB teacher Jordan Saez to hold virtual book reading May 14

Milton Public Library to host special event
May 4, 2021

H.O. Brittingham Elementary School teacher Jordan Sáez will hold a virtual reading of her first published children’s book, “The Last Day of School?” in a forum hosted by Milton Public Library at 6 p.m., Friday, May 14.

Sáez, a kindergarten Spanish Immersion teacher, said the bilingual book marks March 12, 2020, the last day students were in school for the 2019-20 school year before Gov. John Carney closed Delaware public schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The book details students' memories of that day, from the birth of a baby chick to the principal singing and playing “Happy Birthday” on his guitar for a student.

During remote-learning planning workshops that spring, Sáez said she learned she couldn’t read and record for students a book written by someone other than herself due to copyright laws. So, she wrote her own book.

“I was inspired to write it because I was sad my third-graders and I left school and didn’t come back,” she said. “I was blessed with this great opportunity, support and the inspiration to write.”

“The Last Day of School?” is available for purchase at Amazon and Bookbaby.
