Hustle 5K to benefit Ronald McDonald House Sept. 14

August 21, 2019

The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware will present its 8th Annual Hustle for the House 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk with registration starting at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, at Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant in Lewes.

The Somerset Family of Rehoboth will be the honorary event starters. Both runners and walkers are welcome. Registration is $30, students $20. The event will feature a 5K run and 1-mile walk, free Kiddie K for children ages 8 and under, DJ services provided by DJ Twitch, superheroes, face painting, a balloon artist, children’s activities sponsored by Rehoboth Toy & Kite Company and Sharp Energy, Lewes Fire Department fire truck and a post-race party hosted by Irish Eyes.

The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware serves as a home away from home for families who have a child receiving specialized pediatric medical care at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children or Christiana Hospital. The house provides a safe and affordable guest room in a convenient location that makes it easier for family members to stay together while their seriously or chronically ill or injured children receive medical treatment.

The house has 50 guestrooms and asks families to contribute $15 a night for their stay, but the average families are able to donate is $4. No family is ever turned away due to an inability to contribute. The actual cost to operate each guestroom is $72 per night. Therefore, the house relies on support from the community to provide its services. Each year, approximately 2,000 families stay at the house. Nearly 700 families from Sussex and Kent counties stay in the house each year.
