In 2005, Steve Jobs told Stanford graduates, “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.”
Many times I’ve felt those hits; many times I’ve lost faith. I’ve witnessed biases, discrimination, unfair practices and inequity. I’ve seen people unable to earn a decent salary and unable to provide food for their families or pay rent. Indeed, the cost of buying a house is completely out of reach for many in Sussex County. Could I even repurchase the home I bought three years ago? Probably not.
Then I met Russ Huxtable, candidate for Delaware Senate in District 6. His words about helping seniors, veterans and lower-income families gain affordable housing provide hope for those living in our area. These folks have been hit with many “bricks,” but now have some faith that affordable housing may become a reality. In fact, Mr. Huxtable is an expert in this field, often providing the keynote at major U.S. housing conferences.
Here in our state, the Delaware State Education Association focuses on the goal of providing Delaware children with a world-class education. This is their faith, so to speak, and they endorse that faith in Russ Huxtable.
What other “bricks” are hitting us? Well, we worry about increased traffic and infrastructure that struggles with the population boom. This boom creates environmental issues and a healthcare system ill-equipped to provide services to all. Whether education, healthcare, the environment, public safety or equity, Russ has defined his policies and procedures for improvements.
There will always be struggles. But with wise leadership and clarity in action, we will address issues, find solutions and increase our faith in those who make decisions for us.
