Intimidation will not deter peaceful protestors
On July 5, I was among the 100-plus people peacefully protesting President Trump’s policies on Route 1 near Rehoboth. Suddenly, a huge black truck/SUV rapidly accelerated and veered from the right lane into the bus lane immediately next to where we are permitted to stand. The vehicle missed hitting several people by mere inches before it forced its way back into the right lane and roared off down Route 1. This unprovoked attack happened so fast that no one could get a license plate number, vehicle model, etc.
I am hoping someone who was there on Route 1 and witnessed this incident will call the Delaware State Police office in Lewes, 302-644-5020, and share whatever information you have, even if it’s just that you saw it happen. Going forward, we will be watching for license plates and vehicle makes and models.
Following the protest, I reported the incident to the state police and asked if an officer could be assigned to protect us at the Saturday, July 12 protest. I was told to call again Wednesday or Thursday, which I will do. I am confident the state police will respond.
Following the incident, I looked into how many times vehicles have been used to harm protestors. There has been enough of an increase in the last few years that the phrase “Metal Against Marchers” has been coined by the Mineta Research Institute.
Despite this scary incident, I will be at the next protest July 12. To those who honk in support of our beliefs, thank you. To those who disagree, you have the right to do so, but use your words instead of violent acts of intimidation with your vehicles.
