Nearly 40 cars, many with at least two people, participated in a drive-by birthday party for Irene Dash, who celebrated her 100th birthday Dec. 6.

Dash lives in the Sawgrass community off Old Landing Road outside of Rehoboth with her daughter, Barbara Dash, 74. Dash’s other daughter, Miki Dash-Wilkinson, 69, lives in Lewes.

Barbara said Irene was primarily a stay-at-home mom, but became a teacher’s assistant at a high school for disabled children after she and her sister grew up.

Barbara said she and her mom moved from New York City to Rehoboth in 2012. The family grew up in all five boroughs, said Barbara, who described her mom as being generally healthy - especially for a 100-year-old.

When asked how she was feeling, Irene said, “Half and half.”

“That’s what she always says,” said Miki, chiming in and garnering a laugh from Barbara.

Friends and neighbors Christine Cox and Annie Fredrickson helped organize the event.

“This is great,” said Cox. Some of the people who participated just happened to be driving by and decided to take part.

“The happiness is contagious,” said Cox.
