Irene Phyllis Hammond (Tindley) Blake, faith-filled woman

May 2, 2017

Irene Phyllis Hammond (Tindley) Blake, 83, of Bishopville, Md., bid farewell to the earthy world and went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 25, 2017. At the time of her death, she was residing in Newark with her "baby girl" who was by her side as she abandoned this temporary home for her eternal dwelling.

Irene was born at home in Bishopville Feb. 18, 1934. She was the only child of the late Donald Russell Tindley and Mahaley Janey Hammond Boone. Irene was educated in the Worcester County Public School System. She married Quincy Billie Blake, better known as Quint, Aug. 28, 1954; they were married for 51 years. Their union produced six children. Irene worked hard to help support her family and she toiled for many years in the poultry industry at various facilities, Townsends, H&H (now Mountaire) and Showell Farms from where she retired.

Irene was a faith-filled woman. She loved God and she loved her church organization. She was an active member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith and served in many capacities.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Quint; her oldest daughter, Sandra; and her son-nephew, Gary Hammond. Both parents, Donald Tindley (Aldermae) and Mahaley Hammond Boone, her brother James "Sonny" Hammond (Marguerite) and a special aunt Vera Moore also predeceased her. Irene was the surviving matriarch of the Blake family as the wife of Quincy, one of 13 children produced by George and Mary Ayers Blake.

To cherish the wonderful memories of her, Irene leaves five children: Patsy O. Blake of Wilmington, Starr F. Blake of Salisbury, Md., Cindy R. Blake Rogers (Eugene) of Portsmouth, Va., Quincy D. Blake (Beverly) of Bishopville, and Valada R. Blake of Newark.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a special niece Emma Lucille Cannon; a special cousin, Etta Mae Moore;  the innumerable progeny of the Blake Ayers/Ayres family, the Tindley family and the Hammond family; her church family; and countless friends. She will be missed so much by so many.

Family and friends may call for visitation and viewing Friday, May 5, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. A Memorial Service to commemorate the Life of Irene Hammond Blake will follow Friday, May 5, at 4 p.m., at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, 20887 Milton-Ellendale Highway, Ellendale.
