Janet Lynn O’Brien, loved her family, community
Janet Lynn O’Brien, 74, lovingly known as Jan or Mimi, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Lewes Monday, March 9, 2026.
Jan was born Aug. 14, 1951, in Takoma Park, Md., to Frances and Lacy “Bud” Horsley. She lived a life defined by warmth, dedication, and a deep love for her family and community.
On December 29, 1978, Jan married the love of her life, Dr. Edward A. O’Brien. Together, they built a life rooted in partnership, hard work, and shared dreams. Throughout her career, Jan worked for the FAA and also devoted her time to running an after-school program, where she touched the lives of many children and families. She later worked alongside her husband in his podiatry practice, and in their final years together, they became proud owners of The UPS Store in Rehoboth Beach.
Jan found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved Caribbean cruises, long walks on the beach searching for seashells, and spending time outdoors playing golf, tennis, and annual games of horseshoes. Some of her most cherished memories were made in Florida, sharing laughter with family while shucking oysters in the backyard with her parents. At home, she enjoyed crocheting blankets, solving crossword puzzles, and playing online poker.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Edward A. O’Brien; her parents, Frances and Lacy “Bud” Horsley; and her brother, Glenn Horsley.
Jan is survived by her sister, Barbara Bifareti; her son, Jeff Halbert (Stacy); her daughter, Kyla Gebeau (Jeff); her stepsons, Eric O’Brien (Crystal) and Chad O’Brien (Shannon); and her cherished grandchildren, Tyler, Logan, Zach, Mia, Alia, Gavin, AJ, Miles, Tristie and Bella. She also leaves behind many dear friends, extended family members, neighbors, and her adorable Yorkie, Pepper.
Jan will be remembered for her kindness, her sense of fun, and the love she gave so freely to those around her. Her presence will be deeply missed and forever treasured.
Services will be private for immediate family.

in the stars, in the glow of the moon,
in the sun each time it rises.”
