Jase Mitchell selected by Houston Astros in MLB Draft

Cape grad coveted for raw power and arm behind the plate
July 17, 2025

A catcher who cut his teeth with the Milton Little League is one step closer to fulfilling his MLB dream.

After helping Cape win a state championship this past spring, Jase Mitchell, who has already committed to the University of Kentucky, was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 MLB Draft, 216th overall.

“I’m super blessed to have the opportunity to represent Delaware, be a professional and do what I love,” Mitchell said. “I give all glory and credit to God, because without him, I wouldn’t be in this situation.”

Mitchell, who can play first base, third base and in the outfield, was the No. 1 high school prospect in the state and the 35th-ranked catcher nationally.

The Delaware Gatorade Player of the Year reportedly started trending on the scouting circuit after a strong varsity and showcase spring.

On the 80 scale MLB used for prospects, Mitchell was given a 55 for his power at the plate and his arm. Known as a big-bat, big-arm player, Mitchell’s commitment to the University of Kentucky would put him in the ultra-competitive Southeastern Conference, but the Houston Astros invested a seventh-round pick on him with the intent to sign him.

It is being reported Mitchell will ink his name to a contract.

“Jase has worked his butt off the last couple of years to reach his goals,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “He’s just beginning the process to get to where he ultimately wanted to be, but he knows what it takes and has all the tools to do it.”

Evick witnessed firsthand the type of impact Mitchell can have on a clubhouse.

“He is a natural leader that will have a lot of success at the professional level,” he said. “I’m excited to have been a small part in his journey, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.”

Jase smashed five home runs in the regular season of his senior year, batting .509 with nine extra-base hits and 28 RBIs.
