Joseph J. Horvath, retired Navy veteran

August 13, 2025

Joseph “Box” J. Horvath passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025. He was born Oct. 4, 1945, to Joseph and Mary Horvath.

Growing up in Hazleton, Pa., Joe was a gifted athlete who played every sport with his father either coaching from the sidelines or cheering him on. He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1963 and from the McCann School of Business in 1964 before moving to the Washington, D.C. area to begin his career with the U.S. Department of the Navy. His service to his country included being drafted to Vietnam, and his distinguished career ultimately spanned over 30 years as director of procurement for Naval Affairs.

In 1977, he married the love of his life, Sally Parks. After retiring, the couple fulfilled their dream of building a home in Rehoboth Beach, where they enjoyed golfing, playing tennis, and opening their doors to family and friends. Following Sally’s passing in July 2024, Joe continued to carry their shared joy for life with grace and strength.

He is survived by his beloved Parks and Sheeto cousins, as well as a wide circle of friends who will forever cherish his kindness, warmth, humor, and generosity.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m.
