Just the facts about two projects

June 3, 2025

Two articles caught my attention in the Friday edition of the Cape Gazette. The first was the purchase of a hybrid electric ferry. What was not mentioned in the article is that the ferry is going to be much smaller than the existing ferry. I pointed out the discrepancy in a previous letter to the Cape Gazette. A smaller ferry would of course use less energy. Oh well, so much for facts.

A second article of interest was a meeting that took place at the Lewes library regarding a new homeless location. Supposedly, it received support from those in attendance. What no one mentioned is the homeless shelter is a couple of miles outside the Lewes city limits. It amazes me that Lewes is taking credit for a shelter that is not in the town. Oh yes, it does have a Lewes zip code, but so does a large portion of Sussex County. This is a classic example of the old adage of “not in my backyard.” So of course the citizens of Lewes supported it at their library and even contributed $25,000 because it’s not in their town. It’ll be someone else’s problem. Oh well, so much for facts.

Lewes now dumps this problem on Sussex County. County officials will be the villains if they don’t OK this campground. How would you like to be living in the housing units directly behind that new homeless facility? Great move for the town of Lewes, but a terrible situation for the folks in the area of this facility. Why didn’t Lewes use all the extra ground in their town they are trying to purchase for open space for the homeless shelter? What a scam. Hopefully county council rejects this project and suggests Lewes build the shelter in their own backyard.
