Katharine Caldwell Scott Becque, had many interests
Katharine Caldwell Scott Becque, 97, known to her loved ones as Kay, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, in Salisbury, Md. She was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Mexico City to Katharine Caldwell and William Ryland Scott.
Kay grew up in Ridgewood, N.J., and Bridgeport Conn., before graduating from Goucher College as a music major. She then returned to Ridgewood to raise her family. Kay has been a resident of Salisbury since 1975.
She had many interests throughout her life. Her lifelong love for tennis started when her parents founded Upper Ridgewood Tennis Club. She became a board member of the club in her adult years. Kay played in tournaments in Salisbury into her 70s! After that, she became a regular at Salisbury YMCA. She played bridge, formed a jazz club with local musicians and jazz enthusiasts, and was involved in several fiber art groups involving knitting, needlework, and quilting. She loved the beach and had a second home in Rehoboth since the 1960s.
Kay dedicated her time to volunteering at the Ward Museum, where she established the gift shop and docent program. She served on the board of directors and was honored with the Chairman’s Award for her service. Kay enjoyed political engagement in conversation, debate, and involvement with the local Democratic Party. She enjoyed taking classes in history and politics at the MAC Senior Center for lifelong learners. Kay was involved in several local environmental groups, including Wicomico County Land Trust. Her commitment to her community was acknowledged when the mayor of Salisbury dedicated Nov. 4, 2006, as Kay Becque Day.
Kay will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her zest for life, positive outlook, and dedication to her loved ones and community will forever be remembered and cherished.
Kay is survived by her three children, Scott, Bruce and Janet Dittrich; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Becque.
