Kent County Tourism recognizes Downtown Delaware as attraction of the year

Speedway's Gary Camp named Tourism Person of the Year

Kent County Tourism hosted its 20th Annual Celebration of Tourism  Nov. 4 at the Duncan Center downtown Dover, recognizing Downtown Delaware and the towns of Dover, Milford and Smyrna as the Tourism Attraction of the Year for 2011. Gary Camp Sr., communications director at Dover International Speedway, was named Tourism Person of the Year.

The Tourism Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Heather Cregar, marketing and promotions director for Delaware State News. Donna Davidson, general manager of Holiday Inn Downtown Dover, was awarded Tourism Partner of the Year.

"Downtown Delaware and the Main Street-related communities of Smyrna, Dover and Milford earned the Tourism Attraction of the Year award based on the collective hard work that the organizations have done to rejuvenate our downtown areas," said Cindy Small, executive director of Kent County Tourism, the premier destination marketing organization for Kent County.

"Under the leadership of the Delaware Economic Development Office's Downtown Delaware program," she said, "our downtowns are attracting new businesses, have completed branding projects and are working on critical infrastructure that will continue to attract visitors to the area."

Camp was recognized for excellence in his field, having recently been named the nation's top NASCAR public relations professional, and for helping to put Dover on the map. Davidson was recognized for numerous partnerships with Kent County Tourism, including hosting the Capital Region Bridal Showcase and partnering on educational seminars and special events. Cregar was recognized for volunteering at numerous Kent County Tourism events including Dover Days.

Kent County Tourism, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit destination marketing organization tasked with creating a positive economic impact for residents and businesses in Kent County.
