October 8, 2018

Rehoboth Beach native Kyle Joseph was among those honored at the white coat ceremony held Sept. 29 at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. The ceremony symbolizes the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Class of 2022 induction into the medical profession. Founded in l899, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine has trained thousands of physicians who practice a "whole person" approach to care.

Joseph, the son of BJ and Melissa Joseph, graduated from The Jefferson School and Worcester Preparatory School. Joseph obtained a bachelor of science degree in biology and a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Vermont. He continued his graduate work at the University of Vermont and completed an accelerated research-thesis master's degree in neurobiology.

He credits his interest in medicine and drive to apply to medical school with support from his mentors, Dr. Nancy Gideon, Dr. Lawrence Chang and Dr. Stephani Allison, as well as friends and family in the Rehoboth Beach community.

The physician's white coat has been part of the profession since the 19th century. The concept originated from the operating room's white coat, and has served as a visual symbol of the profession that stands for the need to balance excellence in science with compassionate caring for the patient.
