Sen. Tom Carper visited Georgetown May 4 to announce a $3.8 million American Rescue Plan Grant award to La Red Medical Center.

The grant funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will help La Red continue to provide COVID-19 vaccinations and testing in Sussex County, Carper said.

For the past 14 months, America’s healthcare system has been tested in ways no one could have imagined, Carper said, and the grant award will allow La Red to expand its efforts to provide quality healthcare to Delawareans who otherwise would not have it.

“This year, La Red is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and it may be its toughest year yet,” Carper said. “Working with local churches and organizations to reach out to the most rural parts of our county, La Red reaches tens of thousands of Delawareans who face barriers to receiving care, especially during this pandemic when so many patients were home-bound. I’m so proud that we are able to fund our federally qualified health centers like La Red so that all Delawareans can receive quality, affordable healthcare.”

Reminding attendees of ice hockey great Wayne Gretsky’s quote, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take," Carper urged people to get vaccinated.

Getting shots in arms will get the country up and running again, Carper said, and it will be nice to put masks in the drawer instead of on faces.

The American Rescue Plan, signed into law in March, provides $7.6 billion for community health centers such as La Red. Funds can be used to respond to COVID-19, including testing, vaccine administration, delivery of healthcare services, infrastructure modifications, and community outreach and education.
