August 14, 2018

Lewes boat Delgato, skippered by Nick Carter, brought home the non-spinnaker class Cape-to-Cape Challenge X Cup in the annual race between Lewes and Cape May, N.J.

This year’s two Aug. 3 buoy races were hosted by Lewes Yacht Club along the shore of Lewes Beach. The following day, the LYC race committee started the Cape-to-Cape race which finished in Cape May, home of the other event host, Corinthian Yacht Club, where an awards dinner and ceremony took place.

Delgato, a Catalina MkII, won the first and then finished second in the Aug. 3 races. The crew finished first in its class in the Aug. 4 race across Delaware Bay with a time of 2:24.59.

Two Corinthian Yacht Club boats won the other two classes. Max Power, skippered by Gerritt Schulze, won the spinnaker class, and Goofyfoot, skippered by John Wisley, won the J 70 class.

Other Lewes boats finishing places were: Spinnaker class: Balance, skippered by Richard Beebe, fourth. Non-spinnaker class: Mahal, skippered by John Nelson, third; Calaloo, skippered by Tim Douglas, fifth; Pearl, skippered by Dave Cerney, sixth; and Sante, skippered by Steve Nieblas, seventh.

Two buoy races Aug. 3 and the traditional Cape-to-Cape race Aug. 4 were used to compute final results.
