Lewes In Bloom cancels annual tulip dig

Spring bulbs will be sheltering in place due to COVID-19
April 15, 2020

One of Lewes’ traditional spring events will not take place this year. Due to Gov. Carney’s executive order regarding social distancing, the annual tulip dig is canceled.

Each spring in late April or early May, the city invites members of the public to dig up the spent tulips and spread the beauty to their yards. Hundreds bring their shovels and buckets to take home their bounty of the gorgeous bulbs. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on that event as well as the annual tulip festival.

Alison Kirk, Lewes’ Parks and Marina administrator, considered various options to have the dig take place, but none was found to be viable.

Warren Golde, a Lewes in Bloom board member and horticulture committee chair, said the plan is to allow the foliage to ripen and the bulbs to remain in the ground to bloom next year.

Lewes in Bloom is in the process of preparing annuals for planting as soon as the ban is lifted.

Lewes in Bloom is a volunteer organization of more than 280 members who volunteer hundreds of hours each year planting thousands of bulbs and plants throughout the city.
