“I’ll be back,” yelled a cyclist as he passed the new Lewes Brewing Company on the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail.
The Sept. 23 ribbon cutting at 1145 Savannah Road was a sight for sore eyes for trail users and a big relief for owners Dave and Christine Jones.
“We’re very excited to open up, be accepted into the town and finally invite our customers in to sit down and enjoy what we’ve built here,” Dave said.
The brewery was supposed to open last year, but supply chain issues caused a delay in getting brewing equipment.
Everything inside is brand new, with a classic craft brewery look and atmosphere. There are windows that can roll up to give an open-air view of the bike trail.
Andy and Elba Pillion of Lewes were among those who enjoyed some first-day brews.
“They did a great job. The beer is really good. I feel like it’s an amazing addition to our town,” Andy said.
There are currently 10 beers on tap, including IPAs, sours and a seasonal pumpkin ale. Dave said it will not be long before they start canning, and filling crowlers and growlers to go.
He said they source their hops from North Carolina and their grains from Washington state.
He said it takes a few weeks for the ingredients to go through the fermenting process before they become ice-cold beer.
Dave said he has more products coming down the trail.
“Eventually, we’ll do some seltzers and ciders. We have a slushy machine, so we’ll do some beer slushies, more in the summer,” he said.
He said food will be provided by local food trucks.
Lewes Mayor Andrew Williams raised a glass to the Joneses.
“When they were coming in for their site plan, they promised to deliver a beautiful gateway to the City of Lewes, and they more than delivered,” Williams said.
Lewes Brewing Company is open daily 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, go to lewesbrewing.com.
