Lewes Elementary student leaders plan talent show, donation drive
Lewes Elementary student leadership team members help plan and steer school-wide events and initiatives throughout the academic year.
The team was created to foster a sense of responsibility, collaboration and creativity among students, while giving them a platform to share ideas, take initiative and make a positive influence on the school community.
“These students are the future leaders of our community, and we believe in empowering them now,” said Dr. Kimberly Corbidge, Lewes Elementary principal. “This team gives students a voice and helps them develop critical skills in teamwork, communication and leadership, all while bringing students, staff and families together for the same purpose.”
This year, the team has worked hard behind the scenes to prepare and complete two major projects.
Marisa Wengryn, speech and language pathologist and SLT advisor, said she was delighted with the students’ ability to plan, promote and execute the very first Lewes Elementary talent show. “Their attention to detail and ability to work together for a common goal – a successful and fun talent show for the students and families at Lewes Elementary – was very impressive,” she said
Students also organized a donation drive for the Humane Animal Partners adoption center in Midway. “The highlight of this project for the students was having the opportunity to hand deliver the donations they collected to the Humane Animal Partners organization,” said Brennan Clarke, instructor of multilingual language and SLT advisor. “During the delivery, they met with staff to learn about the positive impact their donations will have on the shelter and were able to spend some time with an adoptable puppy name Kiki.”
Members are selected through an application process and staff recommendations, highlighting students who show leadership, initiative and a strong sense of community.
“Our hope is that parents, teachers, and students alike are excited to see the positive changes and fresh ideas this leadership group will continue to bring to the school in the years to come,” said Corbidge.
