Lewes farmers market to offer fall flavors Nov. 16

Casa San Francisco food drive continues
November 14, 2019

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Shields Elementary School parking lot just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive in Lewes, rain or shine.

Offerings from farmers/producers include Hubbard squash, sweet carrots, Brussels sprouts, persimmons, cauliflower, collard greens, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, beets, radishes, arugula, spinach, apples, mushrooms, peppers, onions, fennel, oysters, cider, chicken, pork, eggs, jams and jellies, milk, yogurt, baked goods, fresh-cut flowers for the table and fall-flavored wreaths for the door.

The market will conduct a food drive Nov. 16 and 23 to benefit Casa San Francisco in Milton.

Casa San Francisco offers an emergency shelter providing housing and three daily meals for up to 12 adults for a maximum of 30 days. Its food cooperative helps families and individuals by providing a supplemental bag of groceries once every month. Its emergency food pantry is stocked with donated food for people in crisis.

By gathering food from market vendors, organizers glean items to give to Casa San Francisco, and customers can help by purchasing something fresh from a vendor and bringing it to the HLFM table to donate.

Other welcome donations include spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf-stable milk, rice and beans. Organizers request that donors honor the HLFM mission and the health needs of food bank clients by providing healthy foods.

To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 for each SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants can pick up the bonus $20 in tokens at the SNAP tent for market use.

There’s lots of parking at the Lewes School parking lot, just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive, directly across from the market.

Customers can subscribe to the free HLFM newsletter for timely updates; it’s sent out Thursdays. To be included, email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.
