Lewes fire chief resigns

July 21, 2025

The Lewes Fire Department chief has resigned in connection to a derogatory comment he made in a public setting.

William Buckaloo resigned and is suspended from the department pending the outcome of a full investigation, the department said in a press release.

“The department recognizes that Mr. Buckaloo’s behavior is disconcerting and respect all points of view. His comments run counter to the department’s beliefs and values of serving our entire community. The Lewes Fire Department will continue to serve the entire community,” the release stated.

Robert C. Stephens is now listed as fire chief on the department’s website.

Buckaloo was elected fire chief in December 2024 by Lewes Fire Department members. In 2020, he was suspended from his position as assistant fire chief for using an anti-gay slur, which made him ineligible to run for office for two years.

Buckaloo apologized for his comment in 2020, and the department moved forward to reconcile with the community. Lewes Fire Department is a private incorporated entity, but receives money from the city, county and state, and through private contributions.
