Lewes groups give so much to community

January 27, 2026

At a time when we all need to appreciate small treasurers, several of Lewes’s finest deserve our appreciation and support.

The Lewes Fire Department, Cape Gazette, Lewes library and Lloyd’s IGA all stand out for being there for us, whenever they are needed.

Lenny and his IGA team work overtime to ensure their store is fully stocked when storms like last weekend’s come along.

They never engage in artificial pricing, always have an abundantly fresh selection and, worth nothing, recently sold their 1 millionth Wonderbird chicken.

Cape Gazette, under new leadership and quality staffing, continues its critical tradition of bringing us important local news and providing a crucial forum for public discussion.

Where would Lewes be without its magnificent library and the opportunities it provides for education and public gatherings, all supported by an extraordinarily talented staff?

And the Lewes Fire Department, whose firefighters and EMS workers made nearly 8,000 rescue calls last year on our behalf, whose members and firefighters work without pay.

Each of these organizations brings extraordinary value to our community, often at little or no cost (I, for one, would pay any amount for a Wonderbird) either directly or via taxes.
