Lewes Historical Society appoints Andrew Lyter as executive director
The board of trustees of the Lewes Historical Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew J. Lyter as its new executive director, effective immediately.
Lyter was promoted from his current position as director of interpretation and curator of maritime history for the historical society. Lyter curated the society’s current exhibitions of Jacob Jones – Lewes’ Own, at the Ryves Holt House on Second Street, and Breaking Britannia’s Grasp, at the Cannonball House on Front Street.
Peter Keeble, LHS board of trustees chair, said, “We are delighted to have Andrew as our new executive director. The board conducted a nationwide search to fill this position. During this process, we interviewed a number of excellent candidates; however, Andrew impressed us above all others with his knowledge, expertise and vision. We look forward to an exciting and vibrant future for the society under his leadership.”
Prior to his arrival at Lewes Historical Society, Lyter held positions with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, Fort Mifflin on the Delaware, and the Independence Seaport Museum of Philadelphia. He holds a master's degree in maritime history from the University of Portsmouth, England, and is currently studying for his doctorate. Lyter is a frequent lecturer at historical conferences both in the United States and abroad.
“I am honored to take the helm of the Lewes Historical Society and usher in its next chapter by working alongside a dedicated staff, board of trustees, team of volunteers and the community of Lewes,” said Lyter. “I look forward to highlighting our shared maritime heritage, strengthening partnerships, and emphasizing omitted perspectives from Lewes’ past. Only through inclusivity and community can the Lewes Historical Society continue to fulfill its mission.”
