Lewes loses bit of charm with Two Dips demo

January 16, 2024

What goes with a visit to the beach?

Ice cream cones, especially real rich, creamy ones, topped with jimmys or sprinkles, maybe nuts. You know, the ones that melt and run down your chin, making a deliciously sticky mess of your face and hands. Backed with live music from hometown performers. Dancing in the street in sandy swimsuits. Ah, bliss.

A natural sequel to a long, happy outing on a sun-filled summer day in our bay; or a fall walk through a fairy tale village of old Victorian homes; or a romp through our state park; or even after a windy, salty and beautiful ferry ride.

On Friday, the fantasy disappeared … forever. Forever. No more pot of gold under a rainbow. No more rest along the Yellow Brick Road.

Two Dips was felled, completely. With it, the wonderful state police museum. And the boathouse. Sigh.

Old Lewes’ main street, Savannah Road, lost its final bit of charm.

Hopefully the locals and visitors will remember the good old days of carefree simplicity.

I will never forget.
