Lewes major all-stars dispatch Mid-Sussex 2-1 in extra innings
A thrilling contest ended July 10 when Lucca Fazio collected a strikeout to give the Lewes major all-star team a 2-1 win over Mid-Sussex in extra innings at Georgetown Little League.
A pitchers’ duel and defensive battle highlighted the first four innings of the second-round District 3 tournament game. Ayden Jester couldn’t get the win, but struck out eight batters over 5.1 innings of work, conceding just one run and one walk. His opposite, Dylan Devoy, picked up seven punch outs in 6.1 innings, and allowed just two hits and one run.
Lucca Fazio, who fired 1.2 innings and got the win for Lewes, cracked open the scoring chest with a solo blast in the top of the fourth inning. Mid-Sussex did not respond until the bottom of the fifth when Bentley Hazard scored on Ethan Baum’s single to center field.
After neither team could capitalize in their respective sixth innings, the game went into extras, putting a man on second to start each inning. Jackson McGinley did his job by advancing Phoenix Condon over to third with the first at-bat. The next batter, Ben Pease, put the ball in play to score Condon and give Lewes the winning 2-1 advantage.
Following a walk to open the bottom of the seventh inning, Cooper Lewis, the runner on second to start the inning, was caught trying to steal third, leaving Mid-Sussex with one out and a runner on first. Fazio struck out the next two betters to seal the deal for Lewes.
With an 11-0 victory over Nanticoke July 12, Lewes reserved its spot in the title game. Grant Hershelman and Michael DiMuzio combined for the four-inning no-hitter. Hershelman tied Nolan Jones and Brody Fazio for the game lead with two hits. Lucca Fazio and Jester each had two RBIs to top all hitters.
Lewes and Mid-Sussex meet for the District 3 championship Monday, July 14.
