Lewes man cited after crashing into three police vehicles

June 3, 2021

A Lewes man was ticketed June 2 after police say he ran into a fully marked police vehicle, which caused a chain reaction with two other parked vehicles.

The man, 62, was driving a 2000 Chrysler northbound on Harbeson Road at 10:44 p.m. approaching three Delaware State Police vehicles parked along the roadway when he drove off the east edge of the road and crashed into the rear of a fully marked Delaware State Police 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe, said Master Cpl. Heather Pepper of the Delaware State Police.

The 2017 Tahoe then ran into the back of a fully marked Delaware State Police 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe with its emergency equipment activated, she said. The 2020 Tahoe, in turn, crashed into an occupied 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe police vehicle, Pepper said.

The police were responding to a burglary in progress at a home on Harbeson Road, she said, before the crash occurred.

The trooper occupying the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe was not injured in the collision.

The Lewes man was transported by ambulance to an area hospital and admitted with nonlife-threatening injuries. He was charged with inattentive driving, failure to maintain lane, and expired registration.
