Lewes no longer little, quiet town

May 12, 2023

I am originally a New Yorker, but I came to Lewes as a little girl to visit in the summer with my uncle who lived here. Another uncle had been stationed at Fort Miles. Many years later, I met my husband on Long Island. He grew up here. We came to see his parents and I often wondered who would ever want to retire here as there was not much to do. And then we retired here. One of the things he always said was that you could throw a bowling ball down Savannah Road and never hit anyone. How true that was. But not so anymore. It is with sadness that I write this. A friend of mine lost her daughter-in-law in a tragic accident Saturday. I read a letter from Neil Trugman in the Cape Gazette this week about a little kindness and patience that is somehow missing in this once little, quiet town. As he wrote, stop the rushing and have patience. Please be kind.
