Lewes opens M&T Bank parking lot for public use

Signage makes clear where and when spots are available
June 3, 2021

There are a few more parking spaces available for people visiting downtown Lewes now that the M&T Bank parking lot has been reconfigured.

The lot opened to the public just before Memorial Day weekend, providing visitors with 10 spaces available at all times plus another 17 spaces available when the bank is closed. The lot also contains two handicap spaces and four dedicated spaces for Hotel Rodney.

A parking kiosk has been placed at the corner of Third and Market streets, with signage and pavement markings throughout the lot to clearly state when and where people may park.

In order to have the lot ready for the 2021 parking season, minor work had to be done, including seal coating, restriping and landscaping. Total project cost was estimated at $18,000 to $20,000, with costs to be split between the city and M&T Bank, plus a smaller contribution from Hotel Rodney. With additional signage and a parking kiosk, the city had been expected to pay $17,000 to $18,000.

The city’s meters operate from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., every day from May 1 to Oct. 14. The bank’s spaces will be available for public use when the bank is closed, which is currently after 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Mayor Ted Becker said the city will accommodate St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, which uses the lot for services on Sundays as well as the first Saturday in July for its annual art show.
