Nearly a decade into relieving back pain for Sussex Countians, Dr. William Pfaff said he got into spinal surgery because he likes the challenge, and the science behind medicine is still in its adolescence.

“The medicine and the methods we’re using today, we probably won’t be using 10 years from now,” Pfaff said.

Pfaff has been performing spinal surgeries locally for nine years, before striking out on his own by opening the Lewes Spine Center at the beginning of the year. Nearly four full months into his new business, Pfaff said things are going great. The new practice is booked for weeks, he said.

The Lewes Spine Center has three exam rooms and a procedure room, which Pfaff said is the game-changer. It allows his office to begin alleviating pain almost immediately, he said, while showing off the foot-controlled surgical bed and C-arm x-ray machine.

Pfaff said many doctors specialize in specific procedures but he offers many different types of back procedures, setting his practice apart. He said a patient can come to him and get relief that day.

Back pain can be debilitating, Pfaff said, and someone with sciatic nerve pain doesn’t want to wait weeks for the surgery.

Pfaff said referrals are not necessary to schedule an appointment. Those days are over with, he said, adding they take all forms of insurance.

Pfaff has a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry from University of Delaware, earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, completed his residency at Temple University and then participated in a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

Lewes Spine Center is located off Route 24 in the Medical Arts Building behind Tunnell Cancer Center, 18947 John J. Williams Hwy, Suite 311.

Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon, Friday.
