Lewes Turns the Town Teal for ovarian cancer awareness

Ribbons affixed to poles and signs throughout downtown area
September 6, 2021

A small group gathered in Lewes’ Zwaanendael Park Sept. 1 to talk about ovarian cancer and attach teal ribbons to poles throughout downtown as part of the Turn the Towns Teal campaign. The effort takes place each September as part of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Survivor Henri Belcher-Stack, event organizer, shared her experience, and urged all women to be aware and proactive. There is no test for ovarian cancer, so knowledge of symptoms is crucial. Symptoms can include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary symptoms such as frequency or urgency. The symptoms are vague, and if they persist more than two weeks, a woman should discuss them with her physician. The symptoms mimic those of other conditions, so the disease is extremely difficult to diagnose.

The local campaign is sponsored by the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation, which is dedicated to saving more women’s lives.
