Lewes urged to approve byway project

May 22, 2017

I urge the Lewes Council members to approve the Lewes Byway TAP Project proposed for Savannah Road. This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance safety and beautification of an often-forgotten portion of town, and will provide a safer route for families and less-experienced bikers to travel from the heart of town to the beach.

It will encourage them to use the coastal marsh side of the road where they will be separated from the road and have substantially fewer commercial driveways, parking lots and intersecting roads to navigate. More experienced bikers will still have a shoulder option, should they prefer.

The project will also significantly improve the context-sensitive design of that portion of the Lewes Historic and Scenic Byway. This funding opportunity was hard-won and should be leveraged to help achieve the byway's goals. It's an opportunity that won't come this way again.
