A Lewes woman, 56, faces a driving under the influence charge Oct. 2 after police say she drove her vehicle into Red Mill Pond.

Delaware State Police were called at 10:12 p.m. to Edgewater Drive near Lewes for a report of a boat that had capsized in Red Mill Pond, and learned instead it was a Dodge Durango, which was traveling on Edgewater Drive and then drove through a vacant lot before plunging into Red Mill Pond.

Police said members of the Lewes Fire Department removed the woman from the submerged Dodge Durango, and when police spoke to the her, she showed signs of impairment and refused to take Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The woman was taken to an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries. After her release from the hospital, police said, she was charged with DUI.
