A 56-year-old Lewes woman faces a driving under the influence charge after police say she drove her vehicle into Red Mill Pond Oct. 2.
Delaware State Police were called at 10:12 p.m. to Edgewater Drive near Lewes for a report of a boat that had capsized in Red Mill Pond. Upon arrival, first responders learned it was a Dodge Durango, which was traveling on Edgewater Drive and then drove through a vacant lot before plunging into Red Mill Pond.
Police said members of the Lewes Fire Department removed the woman from the submerged Durango, and when police spoke to her, she showed signs of impairment and refused to take field sobriety tests. The woman was taken to an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries. After her release from the hospital, police said, she was charged with DUI.
