Lewes Yacht Club Foundation debuts 5K run fundraiser

Spinnaker Run set for Nov. 2
October 18, 2025

Lewes Yacht Club President Sue Keller has thought about a 5K fundraiser for the club’s foundation for years, and this year it’s finally happening.

“I thought it would be a great way to raise funds for the foundation,” she said.

Keller also thought it would be a great way to honor former President Chip Beaverson, who had supported starting a 5K race for the foundation.

Now named the Spinnaker Run, the maiden event will be held Sunday, Nov. 2, starting and ending at Lewes Yacht Club on Cedar Street in Lewes.

The cost to run the 5K is $39.03 if registering on the Races2Run website, and $40 on the day of the race. The event also offers a 5K competitive walk and a noncompetitive 1-mile walk.

Keller said funds raised will be used to continue the foundation's mission of providing sailing, swimming and maritime activities for youth.

For 15 years, Keller said the foundation has provided grants to West Side New Beginnings, Rehoboth Boys & Girls Club, and the Sussex Family YMCA so children can learn how to sail, swim and enjoy other maritime programs.

The foundation also provides scholarships for high school seniors pursuing post-high school programs in environmental, ocean science or maritime studies, or marine/vessel operations.

“Money raised will go to continue the programs we’ve been offering, and hopefully we’ll be able to add to them,” Keller said.
