Library to host a whale of an education session June 29

June 20, 2022

The Rehoboth Beach Public Library will host Whalemobile owner Cynde McInnis and her life-sized (43-foot) inflatable whale, Nile, at 4 p.m., Wednesday, June 29, as part of the Oceans of Possibilities summer reading program.

Youngsters will meet Nile, a representation of a 35-year old humpback whale whom McInnis has seen almost every summer since 1994 off the coast of Massachusetts. They can go inside the inflatable whale and learn about how whales are similar to and different from humans.

Attendees will learn about Nile’s migratory path, how many calves she’s had, and how researchers have learned this information. Artifacts such as baleen, teeth and bones will be available for children to see and feel. At the end of the presentation, they will be encouraged to become playground protectors and see how much trash they can collectively pick up this summer.

McInnis, currently a naturalist with 7 Seas Whale Watch out of Gloucester, Mass., is in her 29th season of working on whale watch boats. Having studied whales in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, she brings her passion for these animals as well as her vast knowledge of them into schools and libraries to help cultivate the next generations of ocean advocates.

The Rehoboth Beach Public Library is located at 226 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
