Local Christmas golf gift opportunities

December 14, 2018

There’s still time to find something nice for your golf-loving friends and family members among the Cape Region’s golf courses and other golf options.

365 Golf

With the closure of Out of The Sand, Ben Batemen’s simulator business at 37156 Rehoboth Ave. is now the only publicly available place to hit golf balls in perfect conditions year-round. Sessions are available by appointment between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. most days. Gift cards can be purchased at 365golfde.com or by calling 302-727-0789.

Steve Smith PGA

I profiled local PGA golf professional Steve Smith in 2016 after I watched him give an impromptu lesson to two struggling golfers at Rookery South. That piece became the first one in my new book, “Hole By Hole.”

Smith now runs a popular lesson business at 365 Golf. His normal charges are one hour for $85, or four sessions for $300. Smith is also pleased with the response to his couples’ program. Both people receive half-hour lessons “so they can help each other when they play and practice,” he said. That same $300 discounted arrangement for four lessons also applies.

Contact Smith at 302-236-3645 or oneironwedge@comcast.net.

American Classic Golf Club

Located in Midway, American Classic is a well-run nine-hole course with a relaxed atmosphere the Morrison family instilled since they bought the place.

Their pro shop’s 12 Days of Christmas sale runs until Dec. 23. Each day features a different deal. Britt Morrison says they have “great prices on Loudmouth apparel, Srixon golf balls, logo’d apparel and more.” Tees, lessons and gift certificates are also available.

The club has stepped up its service offerings, including club re-grippings. See Austin at the pro shop to schedule an appointment.

For more information, call 302-703-6662 or go to americanclassicgolf.com.

Stenger's Shamrock Farms Par 3

Bob and Wendy Stenger’s nice little par 3 course on Saw Mill Road west of Milton is open year-round. Greens fees are $15 and pull cart rentals are only a dollar on this easy-walking layout.

Gift certificates are available, and the course is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 302-684-1808 for more information.

Midway Par 3

Barbara Moore says the longtime Cape Region favorite for locals and tourists is offering several discounts, such as 20 percent off sunglasses, towels, caps and gloves. Ten-round golf packages are also on sale (juniors $85, seniors $104, friends and family $112), as well as other discounted round options. The course is just off Route 1 at 34578 Pinnacle Road. Call 302-645-7955 or go to midwaypar3golf.com for more information.

The Rookery

The Rookery offers two golf courses at the Milton and Milford locations, both off Route 1.

Rookery North head pro Kyle Deas says his shop is selling demo or old inventory golf clubs as low as $99 for wedges and $250 for drivers. Golf shirts are on sale there for as low as $22.

Both pro shops offer bags, shoes and summer shirts on sale at 25 percent off. Gift certificates are also available.

For more information, go to rookerygolf.com or call 302-684-3000 or 302-422-7010.

Heritage Shores

Discounts for the holiday sales at the Signature Shop and Golf Shop at Bridgeville’s Heritage Shores depend on the date.

Until Dec. 18, the discounts for qualified items are 30 percent off, which drops to 25 percent off from Dec. 19-24. The sale excludes Scotty Cameron putters, accessories, Oakley Sunglasses and consignment items, but many other items are available. At the golf shop, all clubs with holiday tags qualify for the discount.

For more information, go to heritageshores.com or call 302-337-7514.

Baywood Greens

The “exclusively public” golf course near Millsboro is running several holiday sales specials.

Titleist Pro V1 and V1x golf balls are $40 per dozen through Dec. 31. All in-stock golf shoes are 20 percent off, with 25 percent off in-stock golf bags. Winter apparel is on sale from Adidas, Straight Down, Greg Norman, Cutter & Buck, and FootJoy.

Among clubs, Baywood is selling Cleveland wedges for $89 and TaylorMades for $99. Other clubs on sale include Ping, Titleist, TaylorMade, Cleveland and Callaway. Lesson packages and gift certificates are also available.

Mulligan’s Pointe

The former Sussex Pines is offering several different gift card options for rounds of golf with cart, cart rentals, or in $10 and $25 increments. It is also selling golf-and-dine packages with added gift card bonuses, as well as a six-round package for the price of five.

FootJoy and Callaway shoes are on sale at 35 percent off, with 40 percent discounts for headwear from Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway and Ping. NFL Logo golf bags are also on sale at 25 percent off.
