This year, Delaware breweries will celebrate local beer culture during the 2020 Delaware Beer Drinker’s Choice Awards from 12 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 23, at Crooked Hammock Brewery in Lewes, with representation from every craft beer concept in the state.
“The Delaware Beer Drinker’s Choice Awards highlight the amazing array of quality beers available from brewers around the state,” said Liz Keller, Delaware Tourism director. “The state’s craft beverage industry is growing. The Delaware on Tap mobile app now includes 36 locations including wineries, cideries, distilleries and meaderies. These passionate and innovative business owners are a major part of Delaware’s $3.5 billion tourism industry and part of the Endless Discoveries that make the state such an attractive destination for visitors.”
An amazing array of quality beer is exactly what event guests should expect, along with some of Delaware’s best brewers embracing their unique characteristics in humorous costumes. Attendees are also encouraged to dress up, and this year for the first time will be awarded for doing so with a gift basket featuring prizes from participating breweries.
"We created this event to celebrate the kick-ass Delaware beer scene, and build camaraderie and a little bit of fun competition between all of the Delaware breweries,” said Rich Garrahan, Crooked Hammock Brewery owner. “Last year we added the annual brewer’s breakfast to start the day. The Crooked Hammock chef prepares a breakfast buffet for all of the breweries. It gives us all a chance to hang out for an hour before the event starts."
Garrahan added, “My favorite part of the event is the costume competition and the videos the breweries produce to promote the event. It keeps the competition and the whole energy of the day lighthearted."
Big Oyster’s Mike Anderson is also excited about this year’s event and the evolution of the craft beer scene in Delaware: "Each of the breweries has really worked to build their identities through putting out some great beer, press, media and by building awesome atmospheres for locals and tourists alike to enjoy, creating memorable experiences. They share these beers and stories with their families and social media outlets, and use that as fuel to bring them back the next time they are in town. From north to south, all of our local breweries have so much to offer, and it's been a great ride so far, but honestly, it feels like the best is yet to come for a lot of us.”
