Local photographer strives to give back through his work

February 2, 2023

“I’ve always felt that, should I ever have my own business, somehow I’d include some way of giving back,” said local photographer Tyler Smiley. True to his word, he has done just that.

In late 2021, Smiley launched his Photographer’s Promise campaign through his photography business. The goal is simple: use the platform his work has given him to make a difference and give back.

Through this operation, Smiley sets aside 15-25% of his profits from each print he sells and donates the money to a nonprofit organization that focuses on conservation and natural preservation.

“Being able to get out in nature and capture these moments is really special, so it only made sense to give to these causes through this program and do my part to preserve nature for generations to come,” he said.

Previously, Smiley has donated to The Ocean Foundation, an organization focused on cleaning the oceans and creating conservation efforts for sea life. This year, he hopes to concentrate on doing good locally while growing the total amount of his donations as well. His goal for 2023 is to donate at least $1,000 to different organizations through Photographer’s Promise.

“It’s a lofty goal, but one I definitely think is doable,” said Smiley.

Smiley offers his prints for sale exclusively online at tylersmileyphotography.darkroom.com, but special orders of any photos seen on his social media pages can also be requested at tyler@tylersmileyphotography.com.
