Local Vietnam veterans marshal Kentucky tornado disaster relief

January 5, 2022

The Sussex County Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1105 organized a relief effort in response to the disastrous tornadoes that struck Kentucky in December.

In coordination with the state VVA Chapter 1104, the response was terrific and numerous items were collected including clothing, toys, water and household necessities. A rental truck filled to the brim departed from Lewes Dec. 28 to make the journey to meet volunteers from Chapter 1104 in Kentucky.

Sussex VVA Chapter 1105 member wish to express their sincere gratitude for the tremendous response. In particular, they would like to thank the Cape Gazette, Delaware State News, WBOC, Penske truck rentals, Mountaire Farms, and the various homeowners associations, especially that of Chapter 1105 President Rodger Rose and numerous other individuals. And a big hug and thank you goes to Greg Hudowalski, who helped drive to Kentucky.

Chapter 1105 previously donated $500 toward the relief effort and was able to collect another $800 in cash donations. In one instance, in the true spirit of giving, the young grandchildren of a grandfather with pride in his eyes donated five $10 gift cards.

The VVA has a motto, In Service to America. With the help of the organizations and individuals mentioned above, all participants hope that the spirit of that motto has been realized.

VVA Chapter 1105 invites all Vietnam veterans and Vietnam-era veterans to reach out with any questions concerning membership to Rodger Rose, president, at 303-618-2990 or 302-947-9626. Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at American Legion 28 on Route 24 near Millsboro, west of Long Neck.
