Loneliness and the importance of social connection is Feb. 3 topic

February 2, 2023

Delaware Hospice will present Overcoming Loneliness: Making and Maintaining Rewarding Social Connections, a free program addressing the epidemic of loneliness in the U.S., from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3, at the Lewes Senior Activity Center, 32083 Janice Road, Lewes.

Speaker Dr. Judy Pierson said, “Loneliness has reached epidemic proportions and is having a damaging impact on mental health in this country. Elders are particularly at risk. Among seniors, loneliness can be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day on mortality rates. Connection, on the other hand, has been linked to improved recovery from illnesses such as cancer, improved mental health and increased longevity.

“Research shows that social connection enhances emotional well-being, physical health and even longevity,” said Pierson. “But how do we develop, nurture and sustain rewarding connections? This presentation will focus on creating quality relationships in adulthood. It will also explore how to unlock more love in current relationships and reap the benefits of even micro-moments of connection. A smile exchanged, words of compassion, a hug, an empathic, understanding look, and just listening create a powerful connection that increases emotional and physical health for both sender and receiver. These exchanges create biochemical changes that improve your physical and emotional well-being, and enhance your ability to connect more often and more meaningfully. Come learn concrete suggestions you can start using today to get connected to others.”

Pierson is a licensed psychologist with a private practice in Rehoboth Beach. She also works for Delaware Hospice as a bereavement counselor and trainer. She has over 17 years of clinical experience.

The event is free and open to the general public.
