LouAnn Hudson set to become Cape’s assistant superintendent

Sussex native continues 34-year tenure in education

LouAnn Hudson will be continuing her 34-year tenure in education as Cape Henlopen School District’s new assistant superintendent effective this summer, a step up from her current position as the district’s director of teaching and learning.

A Sussex County native, Hudson graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in music education and devoted the first 15 years of her career to teaching band, choir and vocal music, sharing her love of the arts with kids. She started in the Caesar Rodney School District in 1990, and then moved to the Indian River School District in 2001, where she worked her way up from teacher to administrator, assistant principal, principal, and director of curriculum and instruction.

The time she spent in the classroom, she said, has made her a better administrator for both students and teachers, and staff.

She came to Cape in 2018, when the district office was expanding to accommodate the area’s tremendous growth.

“Cape Henlopen has long been recognized as one of the leading school districts in the state, and I was ready for new opportunities,” Hudson said.

Her favorite part about her job is the people.

“We have such a talented team in Cape Henlopen,” she said. “No one settles for mediocre here.”

When it comes to the kids, she tries her best to get to know them and always be there for them.

“Building connections is crucial for opening a student’s mind and heart to their potential and helping them achieve their goals,” she said. “They need to understand that you care, and that you will support them.”

In her new position as assistant superintendent, she’s excited to use her knowledge and expertise to serve the district in a different capacity and to learn new things along the way. Her goal is to bring to life the Cape Henlopen Strategic Plan of Action.

She plans to work with Jenny Nauman, who’s assuming the role of superintendent come July, to accomplish the district’s outlined goals in meaningful and measurable ways that can be shared with district stakeholders and the broader community. She appreciates the robust engagement from Cape’s staff, students, parents and community.

Outside work, Hudson loves spending a day at the beach with a good book. She also plays the flute – when time permits – and occasionally performs at church for special events.

She loves early morning workouts and said the 5 a.m. crew at CustomFit360 helps her stay committed to her fitness goals.
