Lunch With a Purpose Coastal Delaware members gathered Sept. 3 at the Clubhouse at Baywood Greens in support of Higher Ground Outreach Inc., based in Georgetown.
Higher Ground Outreach is a local nonprofit day center providing food, clothing, showers, compassion, programs and general help to homeless and underserved individuals in Sussex County.
Lou Hernandez, who co-founded Higher Ground with April Morehouse, thanked the 211 attendees for their support and spoke about the need in Sussex County for programs to assist people who are unhoused. Since it was established in 2022, Higher Ground has served more than 900 individuals. Team members provide three hot meals a day, six days a week, along with peer support, access to daily necessities and connections to other resources to help people in need find a way forward. Higher Ground accepts donations of clothing, shoes, food, paper products, art supplies and hygiene items.
The event raised $14,736 in cash and in-kind donations. A total of 1,173 pounds of nonperishable food was collected for the Food Bank of Delaware.
