Lydic triumphs at GAP Women’s Championship

August 9, 2025

Sarah Lydic of Ocean View won the fourth GAP Women’s Championship July 30 at Wilmington Country Club by 11 strokes. She finished at three-under par in the two-day, 54-hole event.

The two-time DIAA state champion, Indian River High School grad and current Wake Forest University golfer went three-under par on the first day, where the field of 48 golfers played the club’s North Course in the first round and the South Course in the second. Twenty players made the cut for the final round at the South Course on the second day. Lydic shot even par to finish the tournament and was never seriously challenged for the lead.

Sawyer Brockstedt of Rehoboth Beach, a recent graduate of Tower Hill who finished second in the 2025 DIAA Championship, took third place.

High-level juniors

A crowd of 96 junior golfers played the 74th Delaware Junior Boys' and 43rd Junior Girls' Championships at Kings Creek Country Club July 30-31. The boys played the 36-hole individual stroke event from tees averaging between 6,200 and 6,400 yards, while tees for the girls’ contest totaled between 5,300 and 5,400 yards.

Charlie Barrickman of Radley Run Country Club and Christopher Parrish of Running Deer Golf Club tied for first place with a pair of five-under 67s. Weather conditions prevented a sudden-death playoff the second day, but it will be scheduled for a later date.

Current DIAA state boys’ champion Jake Hollerback of Sussex Central scored best for Cape Region golfers in the boys’ category, tied for 30th at 10-over par. Ryan McNett of Cape Henlopen tied for 37th at 13-over par. Chase Thompson of Rehoboth Beach, who plays for Worcester Prep, tied for 67th. Jack Tunnell, a teammate of McNett, tied for 69th. Tyler Outten of Sussex Academy finished 75th.

Megan Choi of Green Valley Country Club won the girls’ championship by four strokes over Krista Brosius, a recent graduate of Caesar Rodney.

Ellie Walls, a varsity golfer for Indian River High, finished fifth. Gabby Hamstead, a member of Cape’s golf varsity, finished eighth.

Ace at Plantation Lakes

Congratulations to Christine Hodakievic for her Aug. 4 hole in one on the 73-yard par three eighth hole at Plantation Lakes in Millsboro. She used a Ping nine-iron and a Callaway pink ball. Julie Spetz, Camille Croteau and Julie Kelly were happy to witness it.

True Linkswear

The annual PGA Show takes place at the West Concourse of the Orange County Convention Center. On Demo Day, events are held at Orange County National Golf Center in Orlando, Fla.

That is not where all the action is, however.

The convention area’s bars, restaurants and hotels do a thriving party business during the late afternoon and evenings, often sponsored by public relations firms pushing their clients’ products and services.

When invited to these events, it seems only fair that I should give these folks a chance to be heard, especially if there’s an accompanying tasty appetizer or two to try.

That is how I met Sam Boden, a managing director for True Linkswear, at an event sponsored by Kevin Frisch PR of Michigan.

Headquartered in the Pacific Northwest, the company was the brainchild of PGA Tour player Ryan Moore and his brother Jason. Their original goal aimed to develop and sell golf shoes, but since its founding in 2009, the company has expanded into the apparel market.

Boden and I concentrated on the shoe offerings at the display set up during the PR event.

He first drew my attention to the noticeably wider toe box, which presents an immediate appeal for senior-aged hobbits. The models are also incredibly flexible and lightweight, a very good thing for those who prefer to walk their 18 holes.

Several models also feature zero drop soles. Boden explained that refers to shoe designs where there is no appreciable height difference between the front and back of sole – presenting a flat feel – and, it’s claimed, maintaining a longer-lasting comfort level.

I saw two shoe lines set for the spring launch. The OG3 Pro features a TPU spikeless outsole and a pebbled engineered leather upper. The waterproof interior bootie come with a two-year waterproof warranty, a good thing in the Cape Region as well as the Northwest. At $195, it comes in four color options and in men’s and women’s sizes.

The LUX2 Maven is the company’s topline shoe, with a $325 price to prove the point. The upper is made from Napa leather attached to a carbon fiber ground force reaction plate above the outsole. The shoe has a presence on the men’s professional tours and comes in three colors.

Local club competition results

The Mulligan’s Pointe Ladies played a Nassau game Aug. 5 in three segments.

For the front nine, Lisa Wooditch won first place, with Janet McCarthy in second and Janece Hausch in third.

Debby Quinn won the back nine, followed by Deb Manelski in second and Kathy Ragolia in third.

Tammy Bresnahan was the overall winner, with Kathy Hudak taking second and Valerie Grib in third.
