Magee Farms recognition for 150 years in Agriculture

June 29, 2016

U.S. Sen. Tom Carper stopped by Magee Farm Stand in Lewes June 10 to congratulate the business on its 150th anniversary, presenting owner Ellen with a congratulatory letter. Magee Farms was established in 1865. In 1908, John Magee’s great-great grandson, Fredrick Magee helped establish the Perch Creek Tax Ditch, which the family still manages.

The family also started growing strawberries, which contributed to adoption of the strawberry as Delaware’s state fruit. Every year Ellen takes strawberries to all the state legislators in Legislative Hall.

Over the years, Magee Farms has continued to expand in size; although the family no longer grows chickens, they have recently become the largest grower of broccoli in Delaware with 35 acres. In addition to expansion, Magee Farms has grown its building and packing sheds and has installed a hydro cooler for produce.  They are a non-GMO farm that sells at stores, farmers markets and their own farm stands.
