Make Turks-Head knot bracelets Dec. 3 at life-saving station

Also known as “sailors’ bracelets” or “surfers’ bracelets,” Turks-Head woven rope bracelets have been worn by mariners for ages, including the surfmen of the U.S. Life-Saving Service.

If a sailor or surfman found himself pitched into the water accidentally, a rescuer could grab such a bracelet with a boat hook and haul the unfortunate person to safety.

Staff from the Delaware Seashore State Park will provide the rope and instruction for participants to make their own. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 3.

The Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum is 3.5 miles south of Dewey Beach and 2 miles north of the Indian River Inlet in Delaware Seashore State Park on Route 1. The program fee is $7.50 per person and covers both materials and instruction.
